Transfer to PhD

Important note: At present, accreditation for the research master in Business Data Science is pending. Until accreditation occurs, admitted applicants will be enrolled in the accredited Tinbergen Institute research master program, where the courses are hosted in a separate track.

Transfer to PhD

The three faculties participating in the BDS program have PhD positions available for students who have completed the research master program.

Researchers at the faculties are available for thesis supervision. Ideally, the master thesis supervisor will also fulfill the role of PhD thesis supervisor. Usually, researchers only supervise one to five (in rare cases) PhD students at the same time.

PhD students are typically employed by the faculty as PhD researcher in a full-time position with all the benefits of employment, including a good salary. During the PhD track, funding for (foreign) travel, conference visits, literature and so forth is available. The number of PhD positions offered by the faculties varies each year. In a typical year, however, all students who perform well and pass the research master program can transfer to a PhD position. However, due to financial constraints and for distributional reasons, BDS cannot guarantee a PhD position for all students.
