Inaugural lecture Jos Akkermans

On Friday, March 28, 2025, Research Fellow Jos Akkermans will publicly accept his appointment as Professor of Sustainable Careers at the School of Business and Economics, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.

Inaugural lecture Jos Akkermans

The inaugural lecture, titled "Everyone a Sustainable Career: Wish or Reality?", is scheduled at 15:45 in the Aula, Main Building of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.

It is important that we start thinking more carefully about how to structure our working lives so that we remain happy, healthy, and productive in the long run. This is an incredibly urgent issue. Just look at the severe shortages in education or the high workload and staff turnover in healthcare. All of this is related to the future sustainability of our careers. And everyone has a career, so we need to pay more attention to this.

These themes will be central to the inaugural lecture of Professor of Sustainable Careers, Jos Akkermans. He will discuss what sustainable careers are, what we know about them, and what he aims to research in the coming years with his professorship. He argues that careers will fundamentally change due to the rise of various new forms of work. He will also explore the extent to which careers can be shaped and the impact of sudden changes. The key question remains: a sustainable career for everyone—wish or reality?

The event is open to all interested parties and includes a reception following the lecture. For those unable to attend in person, the lecture will be available to watch online via a livestream.
