A consortium of European research partners, including TI Fellows Eric Bartelsman and Sabien Dobbelaere from School of Business and Economics, Vrije Universiteit, were awarded a grant for a three year Horizon 2020 research project. The project, Raising EU Productivity: Lessons from Improved Micro Data (MicroProd), will examine the empirical observation that productivity growth in the developed world has slowed down in the past decade despite both continuation of technological innovation as well as greater openness to trade.

Philipp Koellinger (School of Business and Economics, Vrije Universiteit) received a Netspar Topicality Grant for his research project "The effects of genetic health risks on personal expected longevity, insurance coverage, and retirement decisions". Description: Life-cycle decisions are in part based on how long people expect to live. Therefore, observable health risks have the potential to affect individual-level decision making. Currently, genetic health information is becoming increasingly available to patients and consumers, but the extent to which genetic information may affect retirement decisions, e.g., savings, insurance coverage, and withdrawals of pension funds, is largely unexplored. We propose a research project that aims to investigate how genetic risk factors and access to genetic information may affect retirement decisions. Our proposed project uses a genetically informed empirical study design, something that has previously not been done.

Eric Koomen (School of Business and Economics, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam) is responsible for developing the land use and transport modelling environment within the new research project SIMETRI. The research project SIMETRI (Sustainable Mobility and Equality in mega-ciTy RegIons: patterns, mechanisms and governance) brings together researchers from UCL, Birkbeck University of London, King’s College London, VU Spatial Economics, Shenzhen University, Shenzhen Institute of Research and Innovation, The University of Hong Kong and Sun Yat-sen University. SIMETRI will develop a world-class science platform relevant to political decision-makers responsible for housing, transport, employment and urban development in the world’s biggest mega-city region, the Pearl River Delta Greater Bay Area. The platform integrates work on inequality indicators and predicting future land use and transport developed in western Europe in London and the Randstad with related work in Shenzhen and Guangzhou, producing a system that will use state-of-the-art simulation models, big data from routine transport, and new ways of using information technology for participatory governance. Olivier Marie
Olivier Marie, Professor of Labour Economics at Erasmus School of Economics has been awarded a Vidi grant for his project entitled: “The Non-Making of a Criminal”. Crime has recently fallen significantly in the Netherlands with 25% less offences committed than a decade ago. The overall cost of crime to society has simultaneously increased making each offence committed ever more expensive and thus urgent to better understand this crime drop to further improve crime prevention efficiency. The main objectives of this project are twofold. First, advance scientific knowledge of the causes of crime. Second, propose novel efficient policy tools to prevent it. Crucially, it will seek to achieve both these goals while simultaneously developing the concept of a life-cycle approach as the norm in economics of crime research.
