Albert Menkveld with team selected for the Alberto Giovannini Programme for Data Science

A team consisting of faculty member Albert J. Menkveld (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam), and Tinbergen Institute PhD students Shihao Yu (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and Columbia University, United States) and Lucas Saru (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam) have been selected for a contract award in the Alberto Giovannini Programme for Data Science by the European Systemic Risk Board (ESRB), together with the European Central Bank (ECB).

The Alberto Giovannini Programme for Data Science is meant to connect research and policymaking. It aims to develop new tools and methods relevant to the ESRB and ECB, and stimulate collaborations. The program involves a competitive selection procedure, including both an exam and an interview, which was handled very well under Lucas Saru's initiative.

The European Market Infrastructure Regulation (EMIR) requires transaction-level data on derivatives contracts to be reported to trade repositories, and grants the European Systemic Risk Board access to the EU-wide dataset. This data allows new analyses and insights into price stability in financial markets. The awarded teams will have access to this unique dataset, consisting of approximately one hundred million observations per day.

The organization of the research master Business Data Science, together with Tinbergen Institute, is very pleased with this award as confirmation of our expertise in data science.
