In this paper we study the reactions of Dutch automobile drivers to substantial changes in fuel prices that took place in 1986 and 1991 on the basis of monthly panel data. We find different estimates for the price elasticities, depending on the data used and the method employed and argue that this variation in estimates should be attributed to differences in the (perceived) nature of the price changes.
