Abstract
This presentation departs from the rallying cry among actors in the waste sector, lean production, and the circular economy that “waste is a resource” to question heroic efficacy. Questioning this cry in the light of François Jullien’s (2004) Treatise on Efficacy, the chapter demonstrates that viewing waste as a resource privileges an heroic mode of action that relies on ideals, means and ends, and intended outcomes. Paralleling ancient Greek and Chinese philosophies, Jullien contrasts this mode of action where efficacy is defined as an ability to solve problems and reach goals, with an anti-heroic focus on the circumstances of situations, the immanent propensity of things, transformations, and cunning intelligence. From this contrast, emerges a critique of the excessive confidence placed in heroic efficacy. While heroism may have immediate impact, its long-term effectiveness is uncertain as it fails to address the transformative changes that matter in the long term. The global waste crisis epitomizes the necessity to reevaluate heroic efficacy, and Jullien’s focus on transformations rather than actions provides valuable insights. Hyper-efficacy, solutionism and the resourcification of everything need to give way to an efficacy that is better fit to accompany the Anthropocene. On the edge of a 6th extinction, reevaluating the limits of heroic efficacy and seeking alternative approaches should be a priority, particularly in social and environmental policies.Registration has been closed The seminar will be held on 14 September from 12:00 till 13:00 in room HG-02A36.
