Abstract

A major competitive advantage of European research on topics in management and information systems is the deep anchoring in practice. Regardless whether research is action/design-oriented or behavioral in nature, the researcher conducting it is most often interacting with practice and has a naturally advantaged position for research of high practical relevance. This advantage is too often underappreciated and underutilized. With this talk I aim to initiate a thought process on how to harness practical relevance in the publication of research. I will reflect on the usefulness of practical relevance in traditional academic papers, but focus mostly on the available outlets for practice-oriented papers by academics and how to craft manuscripts for those outlets. I will draw on my own experiences as author, reviewer and editor of such papers. Given my own experience, examples will largely be from the domain of information systems, but with broader application in other areas of management.
